Just read a MacLean's article that left me feeling depressed, about how Canadians are mobilizing to fight same-sex marriages. Bloody ridiculous. Apparently right now polls show we're pretty evenly divided, 49% for, 49% against, 2% watching The Anna Nicole show.

Opposition stats by province: BC 45%, Alberta 58%, Saskatchewan 61%, Manitoba 61% (and is anybody surprised at any of those numbers?), Ontario 52% (ARG!! I thought we were smarter than this!!), Quebec 38% (see, this is why I for one don't want them to separate: without them, we're just a bunch of ignorant rednecks in tuques), Maritimes 48% (see? Poor, but decent), Territories ?% (apparently it's too damn cold to take polls up there).

Some other interesting stats:

Most likely to oppose are men (54%), lacking high school diplomas (66%), earning less than $30,000 a year (55%), and aged 55 and up (63%).

Less likely to oppose are women (44%), university grads (36%), earning more than $60,000 (42%), and aged 18-34 (34%).

Also, Catholics are 50% for, 48% against. I guess some people took the "Do Unto Others" part of Sunday School to heart.

The age part gives me hope, too. Hope that someday the bulk of the yahoos will be dead and those left will realize that it's not an affront to All That Is Het to respect all persons who have chosen to make a lifelong commitment to another human being, regardless of their genders.

You know, normally I'm just a liittle more tolerant of moral or religious opposition to homosexuality or homosexual behaviour. After all, the fact is, most major religious teachings are pretty clear that it's a no-no. And normally I can respect that.

But what's pissing me off is that people are getting all riled up over this, screaming bloody blue murder and likening the legalization of same-sex marriage to the Romans persecuting the early Christians, and NOBODY IS SAYING ANY RELIGION WILL BE FORCED TO ACCEPT SAME-SEX COUPLES!!! In fact, they're bending over backwards to ensure that no priest, minister, rabbi, imam, or Central Whirling Dervish will ever be forced to marry anybody.

So why don't they get a grip already!!

Well shit, and I wanted a Whirling Dirvish at our wedding, too.

Well, you'll just have to find one of those rebel Dervishes who's willing to whirl in the face of the International Dervish Brotherhood's resolution on the Preservation of the Traditional Whirling Family :)

Because I'm starting to think that these people are fundamentally unable to get a grip on these things: this is my exact complaint within the UCA following Assembly Resolution 84 - it acknowledges that people had come to differing points of view, held with integrity, and assures people that they will never be forced to accept a gay or lesbian minister. No one says this, but others should equally be able to say they don't want a fundamentalist bible-bashing minister...

Even so, they appear to be unable to get any of this. Wilful blindness and deafness is all very well, but it makes me scream...

Yeah, I remember you mentioning how infuriating that was. You're bending over backwards to acknowledge that other people can hold their views with integrity (even though you can't imagine how that could possibly be)... and then they refuse to do you the same courtesy.

Same thing here.

The other thing that really, really, really gets to me is these people appropriating the language of the oppressed. Crying discrimination and persecution. Excuse me, but I just don't see how being forced to accept that other people can call their relationships marriage equates with a long, long history of harrassment, marginalization, wrongful dismissals, denial of financial, legal and emotional benefits of partnership, blatant ridicule, being told you're going to rot in hell, criminalization of consensual sexual activity, violence, death threats, fatal bashings, etc, etc, etc.

Grrr..
