Hormones

I wonder how much of my behaviour these days is governed by the fact that I'm on a double dose of birth control pill (because every time I tentatively venture into the land of regular doses, I have to Go With The Flow again).

I've been mostly keeping out of the really obnoxious online discussions lately, and trying to steer clear of comments that really get me seeing red. But today, somebody posted yet another declaration of sympathy for poor, beleaguered, downtrodden straight white Christian males, and yet another tirade against all of those people who shout "oppression" and say they want "equality" but really just feel entitled to "special privileges" and blah blah blah

You know, I'm sorry, I know there are cases of members of "privileged" groups (eg whites) being screwed over by quotas and such. But white men have been feeling oppressed and downtrodden since before the days when they owned vast plantations worked by hundreds of slaves and literally had power of life or death over "their" women. It's ridiculous, pathetic, and embarrassing.

So today I answered what I felt, and was probably a bit of a bitch. Or a lot of a bitch. ::shrug:: Whatever. I blame the hormones. And I'm grateful to them :)

Anyway.

Also painted the boys' room with primer today. Hopefully tomorrow we'll paint it with actual paint. And then get our lives back to normal, because right now everything is covered in plastic, the house smells awful, and Daniel and I are confined to the upper floor while Justin and Chris nap in the living room.

I was at a college today, and picked up the school's newspaper on the way out. It featured an editorial by a very embittered white male graduate who had been unable to find a job in his field, and is currently in the Navy, serving on a destroyer, when his goal was to be in a cushy office somewhere. He blamed the school for his inability to find employment. It was partly the fault of its unmotivated career counsellors, you see, but chiefly the fault of an "illegal" job fair the school holds for minorities. Apparently, said job fair is an example of reverse discrimination, allowing employees coming onto the campus the opportunity to "hire on the basis of race and gender." The guy even cited the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which I found highly ironic.

That kind of crap bothers me. This dude's inability to find employment probably has more to do with the nature of his qualification (a Bachelor's in digital design) and his obvious inability to take personal responsibility for anything. Anyone who sits back and blames school career counsellors and a school job fair for not securing them a job is not a victim of a policy designed to enhance opportunity for minorities, but a victim of their own lack of freaking initiative. Who the hell relies on someone else to find them a job? I have no sympathy. It's true, as you mentioned, that there is some unfairness going on, but it's not pervasive and it's not crippling. I think some of these whiny white guys need to grow the hell up.

Whoops. Employers, I meant.

Yeah - at least, not to whites. Funny how a race that boasts the highest mean incomes, most education, highest percentage of CEO's/population, politicians/population, non-incarcerated men/population, and 100% of Presidents and Vice-Presidents so far... calls itself oppressed.

Word.

Yeah, that's what I meant. White males, specifically. (I really shouldn't put crap on people like my English partner until I learn to be comprehensible. ;)) Of everyone, they have it the easiest. Although the opportunity for white women these days is definitely comparable, there remain fields that are male dominated. Politics being the most obvious of these. I will be happy when the US elects a female president. Or when Australia elects a female Prime Minister. ;) I have the distinct feeling I won't be alive to see it, though.

Oh, I knew what you meant and you were quite comprehensible - I was just making a (very) little joke.

Anyway, today I'm planning on going back to being my regular reasonably polite self on the boards and leave the passive-aggressive bitch behind. ::sigh::

It felt pretty good letting go yesterday, though >:)
