We've had the boys going through their toys and selecting which ones they want to keep/toss, and they've done... almost nothing. Chris and I helped for about three hours in all, and most of the toys that were properly sorted/put away were done by us. The rest lay there for nine hours, while the boys sort of puttered around and complained about how much work they had to do.

After various attempts to motivate, prod along, encourage, etc, they eventually got a huge Mrs. Weasley-worthy yelling from me, then were given until bedtime to finish up, or lose whatever toys remained on the floor.

Bedtime came, and their remaining toys went. Into the garbage.

I love my kids. Really I do. Except for those days when the dearest wish of my heart involves dropping them out the window.

In other news, there is no snow. None. It's 4C (39.2F) out, and it's been raining, on and off, for the last couple of days. In January. In Ottawa, where a normal winter day in winter is about -10C (14F), with no green on the ground until March at the very earliest. The Rideau Skateway is closed and doesn't look like it'll be frozen in time for Winterlude.

WTF?

FINALLY - another Mom who thinks like me - yesss! I know I have an easy kid; but some days I just want to throw my daughter off my terrace. Thanks for letting me know that there are other like me around!

Ohgod yeah, you're not alone. Really, nobody can ever get to you the way your own offspring can, you know? It's infuriating.

The weather is insane! I live in New England and it was about 60-70 degrees F today. I wanted to go skiing this break - not going to happen. Agh. I saw robins a week ago. There are like flowers and vegetables coming out and it's still winter, and so they'll die and there'll be nothing in the spring.

Global warming! It's all very disconcerting...

::boggling:: That's 15-20C! That can't be right...

Yeah, same here. Animals are apparently coming out of hibernation right now. Bad move.

Hey now, who said anything about global warming? No no no, I'm sure there's a perfectly reasonable non-human-related reason for all this. Some volcano. Or meteor. Or cow flatulence. Or aliens. Or something that'll mean we can all keep driving our oversized cars to the corner store whenever we feel like it.

It's just an el nino or something. Yeah, that's it.

Exactly! El Nino. Or La Nina. Or La Cucaracha.

Actually, apparently it is partly due to El Nino... but it's depressing to know that the people doing most of the damage will latch on to that as the One and Only Cause and totally disregard every other cause that has anything to do with people. Especially when people = us.

::sigh::

That's pretty much what my whole family kept saying today, lol. We were all walking around outside without coats, in single layer clothes. Rolled up sleeves. It feels like... October, maybe. Or April, even. It's bizzarre.

Granted, there have been some cold days - cold meaning 30-50 degrees F. But usually winters here are like... 20-40 degrees.

I think this winter is really starting to convince some people who used to really not take global warming seriously.

Damn... I wish I had your optimism, and I hope you're right. Because personally, I don't see it. I don't think anything will convince certain people that there's something wrong. Or, more importantly, that there's something they can/should do about it. Case in point, a poll taken not long ago said that something like 71% of Americans believe that there is such a thing as global warming... but only 41% believe it has anything to do with humans.

::sigh::

I keep fearing there will be some weather karma and we'll have snow in July.

Oy, bite your tongue. I've been heading that thought off at the pass for days now.

Culling Time

Culling toys after Christmas is a good thing. Throwing them into the garbage is NOT. It's shameful. Are there no poor people in Ottawa? No Goodwill stores? No day cares that might appreciate some new toys? Sending toys that are probably still useful to the landfill is not exactly environmentally-friendly, either.

Many of them were broken or missing pieces. The ones that were not went to Value Village, which is down the street from us. We also have a Salvation Army drop-off across the street from Value Village and a Salvation Army less than a mile away. Nothing usable goes to waste at our house.
