EMPIRES (a History Fair booklet), by Justin

Here's Justin's history fair book, Empires and When They Ruled. He was responsible for picking/drawing all of the illustrations, writing the text or narrating the text to me, and organizing and arranging the text and pictures. I typed in his work, pointed out some of his more obvious errors, and helped him with the layout a bit.

Oh, and I also introduced him to the concept of self-plagiarism. As he had already written a few pages about the Muslim empires in his book on Religion, we decided he would just reuse those pages here, rather than write out new ones :)

It's the Muslim Empire rather than the Ottoman? I don't know enough about that period of history--or the current discussions about it--to know if they've changed the name recently.

Muslim. The Ottoman Turks are much later, and not the same as the Arabs who created the Muslim empire (and were stopped by my ancestors the French at the Battle of Tours ::g::).

Love that Genghis Khan and the Mongols are in there! Looks great.

Ah, well, there we are then. Somehow this was left out of my "Western Civ" education.

I know that Ottoman Turks do not equal Arabs--I just wasn't aware that there was a Muslim empire that predated the Ottomans. Especially since they ruled everything for like 1000 years.

I think the Ottomans come in sometime after the Mongols overran most of the Muslim empire in the 1200s (which started fracturing in the 700s-800s? Of course, this is all off the top of my head. We need woffproff to settle this for us.

Actually I learned about all of this! While I was teaching the boys, that is. I'm embarrassed to admit that I, a History major, knew next to nothing about the difference between the Ottoman and Chesterfield Muslim Empires. It took The Story of the World, meant for children aged 7-12 or so, for me to learn it. That, and the boys asking all sorts of questions I didn't know the answers to :)

Ah well.

::g:: Somewhere as a child, I read a book (or two) about all the wars of the past and in either there or a book about horses, they talked about the Battle of Tours and the small Arabian horses and light armor of the Arabs vs. the big horses and heavy armor of the French at Tours (which is quite a lovely city in France, BTW!)

I'm a history major too and in the survey course, it tends to be "Fall of Rome, dark ages, Renaissance." As one of my professors once said "nobody woke up one morning and said "oh, it's the Dark Ages!"
