Quick! Without looking any of these up, see if you can name one major historical event that happened on each of these dates, which are in no particular order. And yes, it's hugely skewed towards European/North American history. That's cause these are all from my own history-geek knowledge, and I'm hugely skewed towards European/North American.

Hmmm....

1867 -
1776 - Declaration of Independence of the Thirteen Colonies
1912 - possibly the Titanic?
1865 - end of the (US) Civil War
1917 - USA enters WWI
1215 -
1939 - Beginning of WWII, invasion of Poland
1066 - William the Conquerer does his conquering.
622 -
1914 - Assasination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo, etc, WWI
1918 - Armistice, end of WWI
1929 - Stockmarket crash?
79
1347
2001 - 9/11
1969 - Moon landing
1861 - Beginning of the Civil War.
1963 - I'm so going to have the year wrong, but... Kennedy assasination?
1973 - Nixon resignation? (That's a complete guess).
800
1961 - um... setting up the space program: Kennedy's "fly men to the moon in this decade" speech to the joint session of congress?
1492 - "Back in 1492 (Christopher Columbus) Sailed across the ocean blue (Christopher Columbus)" (old beginners piano piece)...
410
1968 - Assassination of MLK, Assassination of Bobby Kennedy, the 68 Convention in Chicago, Students go nuts all over Europe...

Obviously I'm bad on anything before 1000, and not that great on anything before the 1860s or so... And even then I'm not entirely certain of a lot of them...

1912 - possibly the Titanic?
Yup!

1917 - USA enters WWI
Oh - yeah, that too! I was actually thinking of the Russian Revolution, but yours certainly qualifies.

1066 - William the Conquerer does his conquering.
Heh :)

1929 - Stockmarket crash?
Ding!

1963 - I'm so going to have the year wrong, but... Kennedy assasination?
You got it right :)

1973 - Nixon resignation? (That's a complete guess).
Watergate scandal breaks and starts growing. I believe Nixon resigned in 1974. ::checking:: Yup.

1961 - um... setting up the space program: Kennedy's "fly men to the moon in this decade" speech to the joint session of congress?
Yeah, that qualifies too. I was thinking Bay of Pigs.

1968 - Assassination of MLK, Assassination of Bobby Kennedy, the 68 Convention in Chicago, Students go nuts all over Europe...
Yeah it's a sort of Choose Your Own Big Moment year, isn't it?

I'm rather impressed :)

Okay, I'll give it a try, but I know nothing about Canadian history, and sometimes get dates mixed up. And other excuses for doing badly would go here if I could think of them.

1867 - Andrew Johnson's impeachment?

1776 - the Declaration of Independence

1912 - Woodrow Wilson becomes president after the Republican vote is split between Taft, the incumbent, and Teddy Roosevelt, the still highly popular former president running on a third party ticket.

1865 - the American Civil War ends; Lincoln is assasinated

1917 - the Russian Revolution(s)

1215 - High Middle Ages, but I can't say nearer than that.

1939 - Germany invades Poland, I think. WWII kicks off, anyway.

1066 - Battle of Hastings

622 - I think this is around Bede's time, but can't say any nearer

1914 - WWI kicks off with a bang an assassination

1918 - WWI ends; a global flu pandemic kills more people than the war did

1929 - the stock market crashes, kicking off the Great Depression

79 - Pfft. Something with the Romans?

1347 - ... Grantian codifies canon law? No clue, really.

2001 - I think something happened in September...

1969 - Y'know, I don't remember anything specific for 69. Was it the year of the moon walk?

1861 - Lincoln inauguration; shots at Ft. Sumter; southern states secede; Civil War

1963 - JFK assassinated; the March on Washington

1973 - Watergate, I think. And my older sister was born. And the Americans leave Saigon, maybe.

800 - Charlemagne coronated as the Holy Roman Emperor

1961 - Sputnik, I think. And possibly Gagarin going into space. John Glenn wasn't until 62, if I recall correctly. I think this was also the summer of the Freedom Riders.

1492 - the Reconquista ends; as part of the celebrations, the Catholic Monarchs give Columbus money to sail across the ocean blue and bring back goodies

410 - Rome falls?

1968 - RFK and MLK assassinated;I think Woodstock, maybe.

Okay, I'll give it a try, but I know nothing about Canadian history,
Actually, checking the list I see I only included one date from Canadian history. ::is embarrassed::

Damn, I should've at least put in 1812.

1867 - Andrew Johnson's impeachment?
Wiki says that was 1868. 1867 is the one and only tribute to my own nationalism, because I apparently suck as a Canadian.

1912 - Woodrow Wilson becomes president after the Republican vote is split between Taft, the incumbent, and Teddy Roosevelt, the still highly popular former president running on a third party ticket.
OOh, that's way more historically relevant than the one i was thinking of, the Titanic sinking.

1215 - High Middle Ages, but I can't say nearer than that.
Yes, but I was thinking of a specific thing that happened during the High Middle Ages. In England :)

622 - I think this is around Bede's time, but can't say any nearer
::checks:: This is actually my only non-European/North American date, because I apparently also suck as a non-Eurocentrist.

1918 - WWI ends; a global flu pandemic kills more people than the war did
It is so weird that we so often forget that last one. i wondered if anyone would say it.

79 - Pfft. Something with the Romans?
Yes! Something that went pffffft. Loudly.

1347 - ... Grantian codifies canon law? No clue, really.
Ah, dunno about that one. And when I type grantian canon law, google asks me "Did you mean: granina canon law?" Bloody Philistines.

1969 - Y'know, I don't remember anything specific for 69. Was it the year of the moon walk?
Yup!

1973 - Watergate, I think. And my older sister was born. And the Americans leave Saigon, maybe.
I was thinking Watergate. And that was the year Chris was born too!

1961 - Sputnik, I think. And possibly Gagarin going into space. John Glenn wasn't until 62, if I recall correctly. I think this was also the summer of the Freedom Riders.
Ooh! Sputnik was 1957, but you were right on Gagarin and the Freedom Riders. Cool! I was thinking Bay of Pigs.

1492 - the Reconquista ends; as part of the celebrations, the Catholic Monarchs give Columbus money to sail across the ocean blue and bring back goodies
LOL!

410 - Rome falls?
With a barbarian bang, not a whimper.

1968 - RFK and MLK assassinated;I think Woodstock, maybe.
RFK & MLK yes; Woodstock was 1969. Though I'm a lot of the people who were there only remember 1968-1970s very vaguely, so they'd probably agree with you :)

All correct :) :) :)

I was thinking Russian Revolution for 1917, but JFK's birth works too :)

And that's neat, I wasn't sure anybody would say Roe v. Wade for 1973. I was thinking of that or the Watergate scandal.

Technically, the US wasn't formed until the Constitution, which is 1789. The Declaration was a statement of principles, and there was a war and a Confederation before there was a US. </pedant>

Sorry to be flip about 1973...but that is how I remember it.

So do we get answers? I love how two of us are unsure about Woodstock and that [personal profile] haifisch
brought up Roe v. Wade, which I should've remembered!

Nixon resigned in 1974
From: [identity profile] officerjudy.livejournal.com
Woodstock was in 1969. I only remembered Roe v. Wade because the anniversary is tomorrow.

And yes, Woff certainly is going to smoke our asses! ; )
From: [identity profile] ciroccoj.livejournal.com
Whoa... yeah. For almost all of them. Colour me very impressed!

Though 622 is the year Muslims count as the beginning of the Islamic calendar, as it's the year of hijra, when Muhammed went to Medina.

I get the destruction of the Temple as 70AD. Constantinople fell in 1453, and the Crusaders left in the 1291 or so... and I had to look all of the above up on Wikipedia, so you can take those dates with a grain of salt ;)

And yeah, 1973 is Pinochet, though I was actually thinking of two American events, because I am apparently not only a sucky Canadian and internationalist, I suck as a member of the Chilean Diaspora as well. ::sigh::

And Woodstock was 1969 ;)
From: [identity profile] snarkhunter.livejournal.com
I really, really wanted to put the destruction of the Temple as 79, but I knew it was 70,and then I was all annoyed that 70 wasn't on the list, b/c that's SOMETHING I knew!!
From: [identity profile] ciroccoj.livejournal.com
Funnily, that was one date I had no idea about. And I just finished reading about Judaism in The Heathen's Guide to World Religions, too. ::facepalm::
From: [identity profile] culturevulture7.livejournal.com
I looked it up - 79 is Pompeii!! I knew I knew it, just didn't know...

So 1347 is the Black Plague?

I was a history major at one time ;-D (which is where I met [livejournal.com profile] woffproff

1973 for me is Secretariat and Watergate but since Watergate started in 1972 and ended in 74, I wasn't thinking 73...although that was the big Watergate year.

Well, the Confederation thing I know b/c I'm a Brit Lit scholar. It's not that important in England, but 19th century Canadian literature, particularly those that involve people going back to the "auld sod" are somewhat under the purview, particularly if you're into Imperial fiction. So...that's how I know that.

You know what's weird? GWB's inauguration was literally the first thing I thought of for 2001. Not 9/11. It was strange.

I'm just embarrassed that I almost missed the Titanic. And OMG *kicking* myself for not getting Pompeii.
